The rest of the year Montevideo carries the work: cruise-ship shore excursions from the port, conference shuttles, and matchday transport around the Estadio Centenario, the stadium built for the first football World Cup in 1930. Colonia del Sacramento's UNESCO-listed old quarter is the classic full-day trip, with coaches parking outside the cobbled historic core.
Wine country and practical notes
Uruguay's signature Tannat vineyards sit conveniently close to the capital, many within an hour in Canelones and along the Camino de los Vinos, which makes half-day minibus wine tours easy to schedule between city commitments. Roads between the main destinations are good dual carriageways, distances are short by South American standards, and the FCDO has no travel restrictions for Uruguay, so itineraries here are among the simplest on the continent to plan.
