Getting up to Ronda

Malaga Airport (AGP) is about 100 km away, normally an hour and three quarters, and is the arrival point for most groups; Seville is a similar distance to the northwest and Gibraltar closer to the south. The last stretch climbs through the Serrania de Ronda on winding mountain roads, so drive times stretch beyond what the distance suggests and drivers plan them in daylight where possible. A pre-booked transfer is met at the terminal coach lane.

Coming from the Costa del Sol, the road up from San Pedro de Alcantara is the shortest but also the tightest, with hairpins that suit a minibus better than a full-size coach. Operators will sometimes route a large coach the longer way round for that reason, which is worth knowing when comparing timings.

The gorge, the bridge and where coaches stop

The Puente Nuevo spans the El Tajo gorge and joins the old Moorish town to the newer quarter, and it is the reason most groups come. The Arab baths below the old town are among the best preserved in Spain.

Ronda's bullring, opened in 1785, is one of the oldest in the country and admits groups to the ring and its museum year-round. The clifftop viewpoints along the Alameda del Tajo give the photographs the town is known for.

White villages and wine country

Ronda is the natural base for the pueblos blancos: Setenil de las Bodegas, where houses are built into the rock overhangs, is about 20 minutes, and Grazalema, Zahara de la Sierra and Olvera string out through the sierra beyond. These are narrow-street villages where a minibus with driver is genuinely the right vehicle and a 53-seat coach is not.

The Ronda wine district has grown steadily and several bodegas within a short drive take group visits by arrangement, which pairs well with a village morning and a late lunch.
