Samoa is a two-island country with one main road each, which makes group transport refreshingly simple to plan and slightly unforgiving to improvise. Faleolo and the Apia road
Faleolo International (APW) sits about 35 km west of Apia, roughly 45 minutes along the north coast road. Most international flights arrive from Auckland, Sydney, Fiji or Honolulu, several of them late at night, so a pre-booked group transfer with a name-board meet is the practical arrangement rather than an extra. Apia itself is compact, with the harbour front, the market and the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum at Vailima on the hill above town.
Upolu circuits and the crossing to Savai'i
The classic Upolu day loops the island: the To Sua Ocean Trench on the south coast, Lalomanu's beaches at the eastern end, the Papapapai-tai falls on the cross-island road, and Piula cave pool on the north. Roads are sealed on the main circuits with rougher access lanes to some beaches, which is why minibuses rather than full-size coaches are the standard vehicle. Savai'i, the larger and quieter island, is reached by the Mulifanua to Salelologa ferry, about an hour, with vehicles carried on deck; groups either take the bus across or pick up a Savai'i vehicle at the terminal.
Sundays, villages and local custom
Two things shape a Samoan itinerary more than distance. Sunday is genuinely observed: church attendance is near universal, most businesses close, and many villages ask visitors not to pass through during morning service or the evening sa prayer curfew, when a driver will simply pull over and wait. Second, most beaches and natural sites sit on village land and charge a small entry fee collected locally. Neither is a difficulty, but both belong in the plan, and a local driver handles both as routine. A minibus with driver is the standard vehicle nationwide.
