Castelo Branco is the main city of the Beira Baixa sub-region in central Portugal, with around 35,000 residents in the urban area. The city stands in the foothills below the Serra da Gardunha on the inner plateau separating the Tagus valley from the uplands of the Serra da Estrela. It is most visited for the Jardim Episcopal, the garden of the former bishops' palace, which contains a formal baroque parterre laid out in the early 18th century and decorated throughout with carved granite statuary, including a sequence of Portuguese kings arranged to reflect political history.
The city is also known for the colcha de Castelo Branco, a traditional hand-embroidered bedspread that has been produced here for at least 400 years. Historical and contemporary examples are displayed at the regional museum and at specialist studios in the city. Groups with an interest in Portuguese crafts find Castelo Branco a distinctive stop on any central Portugal tour.
The Jardim do Paco Episcopal is considered one of the finest baroque gardens in Portugal. The formal layout includes granite ponds, box hedges, balustrades, and an extensive programme of stone sculpture. The sequence of Portuguese kings lining one of the central allees is historically notable: the Spanish kings who ruled Portugal during the Iberian Union (1580 to 1640) are represented by figures deliberately carved smaller than their Portuguese counterparts. This studied insult has been maintained through all subsequent restoration work. The garden is adjacent to the Francisco Tavares Proenca Junior Museum, the main regional museum, which holds archaeological collections from the Roman and medieval periods as well as the embroidery collection.
Castelo Branco has no commercial airport. Lisbon Airport (LIS) is around 200 kilometres west, approximately two hours by coach on the IP6 and A23 motorways. Porto Airport (OPO) is around 270 kilometres north, about two hours and forty-five minutes. The city has a rail station on the Beira Baixa line but services are infrequent and coach is more practical for groups. Most groups arrive from Lisbon, Coimbra, or Evora. The Serra da Estrela ski station at Torre is around 80 kilometres north, about an hour's drive.
The Serra da Gardunha rises immediately north of the city to 1,227 metres, a wooded range with viewpoints over the surrounding plains. The village of Monsanto, around 40 kilometres north-east, is one of the most photographed in Portugal: its houses are built directly among enormous granite boulders left by glacial action and the ruined castle above the village gives views across into Spain. The Templars Route connects Tomar, Castelo Branco, Monsanto, and Idanha-a-Velha, a Roman and Visigoth walled town 50 kilometres north-east that retains its original street plan. This itinerary is popular with groups interested in medieval military history and early Christian Iberia.
