Bus Hire in Hoorn

Hoorn was one of the wealthiest cities in the Dutch Golden Age as a major port of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Its historic harbour, ringed by 17th-century buildings, has changed little in outline since the height of the spice trade. The Hoofdtoren, a fortified harbour gate built in 1532, remains the symbol of the city and stands at the edge of the water where the IJsselmeer opens to the north. The West Fries Museum, in the former government building on the Rode Steen square, covers the history of the West Frisian region and the VOC era with a strong permanent collection.

Today Hoorn is a provincial town of around 75,000 people and the principal city of the West Frisian region north of Amsterdam. It draws day-trip coach groups for its historic harbour, its weekly market traditions, and boat trips on the IJsselmeer. The old town is almost entirely walkable from the coach park near the waterfront, and the combination of harbour, museum, and lake views makes it a satisfying half-day or full-day stop.

The Historic Harbour and Rode Steen Square

The Rode Steen is the central square of Hoorn, flanked by the Waag (the former weighing house, now a restaurant) and the West Fries Museum. The statue of Jan Pieterszoon Coen, the VOC governor-general who established Batavia (Jakarta), stands in the centre. From the square, the Grote Noord street leads to the harbour where the Hoofdtoren stands at the water's edge. The area around the Bierkade and Veermanskade offers the best of the waterfront, with traditional sailing vessels moored alongside and views north across the IJsselmeer.

Getting to Hoorn

Hoorn has no commercial airport. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) is around 55 kilometres south-west, approximately 45 minutes by coach on the A7 motorway. By train from Amsterdam Centraal the journey takes around 40 minutes on the direct intercity service. Alkmaar is around 25 kilometres south, about 25 minutes by coach. Volendam is around 20 kilometres south, a 20-minute drive. Enkhuizen is 25 kilometres north-east along the Dijk road, about 25 minutes.

Boat Trips and the Enkhuizen Route

The IJsselmeer, the large freshwater lake formed by the closure of the former Zuiderzee in 1932, surrounds Hoorn on three sides. Historic sailing vessel tours depart from the harbour, typically running one to three hours and taking in the IJsselmeer from the water. The most popular longer itinerary combines Hoorn by coach with a ferry crossing to Enkhuizen, where the Zuiderzee Museum is an open-air heritage village documenting the life of the former fishing communities around the inland sea. Groups can travel to Hoorn by coach, cross to Enkhuizen by boat, visit the museum, and return to Amsterdam by coach. Medemblik, another historic harbour town, is 20 kilometres north along the coast, and the three towns together make a natural West Frisian touring circuit.
