Coach & Minibus Hire in Malta

Nowhere in Malta is much more than an hour from the airport, which makes it a natural group destination: one arrival point, short transfers, and a dense circuit of sights. The trade-offs are narrow roads and summer congestion, which is why the right vehicle size matters more here than almost anywhere. Tell us the group and the plan; the quote comes back fixed.

One airport, left-hand traffic

Malta International Airport (MLA) at Luqa is the only airport, with the whole main island within roughly 30 to 60 minutes of the kerb. Traffic drives on the left, a legacy shared with the UK, and the busy central corridors around Valletta, Sliema and St Julian's crawl at peak; drivers time hotel transfers around it. For the group arrival, the coach stages at the terminal's dedicated bays and the driver monitors the flight.

Valletta, Mdina and the cruise quay

Valletta's walled UNESCO-listed core is closed to coaches, so set-down is at the city gate area with the capital walked on foot; the silent former capital Mdina works the same way, coaches parking outside the walls at Rabat. Cruise calls at the Grand Harbour's Valletta Waterfront generate heavy shore-excursion work: a typical day runs Mdina, the Dingli cliffs and Marsaxlokk's Sunday fish market in one loop. Malta's wedding trade is the other stalwart: venue shuttles between churches, hotels and cliff-top reception sites are a weekly staple, and a wedding transport plan keeps guests together on roads where convoys of hire cars get lost.

Gozo days and vehicle sizing

Gozo runs through the Cirkewwa to Mgarr ferry, a 25-minute crossing with vehicles carried on deck; groups either take the coach across or park it and switch to a Gozo-based minibus at Mgarr. On both islands the village cores, and spots like the Blue Grotto approach, favour midi-coaches and minibuses over full-size vehicles; a 53-seater is fine on the trunk roads but limiting elsewhere. For most touring groups two minibuses beat one big coach here, and we quote both ways on request.

Bus Hire in Malta: Common Questions

Short: most main-island hotels are 30 to 60 minutes from Luqa, with Valletta and Sliema at the nearer end outside rush hour. Traffic drives on the left. The coach stages at the terminal's bays and the driver tracks the flight for delayed arrivals.

No: both walled cities are closed to coaches. Set-down for Valletta is by the city gate and for Mdina at Rabat, with the historic cores walked on foot. Drivers plan the drop and recovery points so the walking legs stay short, which matters for wedding parties in the summer heat.

Through the Cirkewwa to Mgarr ferry, about 25 minutes with vehicles on deck. Either the coach crosses with the group, or it parks at Cirkewwa and a Gozo minibus takes over at Mgarr, which suits the island's smaller lanes. Ferry slots for vehicles should be planned ahead in summer.

Midi-coaches and minibuses, in most cases: full-size coaches manage the trunk roads but struggle in village cores and at sights like the Blue Grotto. For touring groups above 30 people, two minibuses often work better than one 53-seater; we price both options.
