Antananarivo arrivals
Ivato International (TNR) sits about 15 km north of Antananarivo, but the run into the city regularly takes an hour or more because the capital's traffic is severe and the approach roads are narrow. Flights arrive largely via Paris, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Mauritius and Reunion, several at night. A pre-booked group transfer with a name-board meet is the standard, and French is the working language for most drivers alongside Malagasy.
The RN7 and what a touring day really costs
The RN7 running south from the capital toward Tulear is the country's main touring route and the backbone of most group itineraries, passing Antsirabe, Ambositra's woodcarving workshops, the Ranomafana and Isalo parks and the highland scenery between them. It is sealed for most of its length but slow: sustained average speeds are far below European expectations, so a day's driving covers less ground than the distance suggests and itineraries are built in stages with overnight stops rather than long single hauls. Drivers avoid night driving as a matter of practice.
Parks, domestic flights and the season
The national parks are the reason most groups come: Andasibe for indri lemurs about three hours east of the capital, Ranomafana and Isalo on the RN7, and Tsingy de Bemaraha in the west, which needs 4x4 support and is closed in the rains. For the far north and east, road journeys run to days rather than hours, so most itineraries use domestic flights for the long hops and keep vehicles for regional touring. The dry season, roughly April to November, is the practical touring window; cyclones can affect the east coast between January and March. A minibus with driver is the standard vehicle, with 4x4 support where the surface demands it.
