Getting in: borders beat airports
Moshoeshoe I International (MSU) outside Maseru has limited scheduled service via Johannesburg, so most groups arrive by road: Bloemfontein's airport is about two hours from the Maseru Bridge border, and Johannesburg five, making the cross-border transfer the standard arrival. The border post handles coaches routinely; passports are needed and group manifests speed the queue. Maseru itself is compact, with conference and government work the city's steady charter demand.
The highlands: dams, falls and passes
The signature group days climb east. Katse Dam, centrepiece of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project and one of Africa's great engineering sights, is about three and a half hours from Maseru on a spectacular tarred mountain road with a visitor centre and dam-wall tours. Semonkong's Maletsunyane Falls, a 192-metre single drop, runs as a long day or an overnight with the lodge. Thaba Bosiu, the mountain fortress where the Basotho nation was founded, is the easy half-day nearer the capital. Minibuses handle the tar; genuine 4x4 territory, like the Sani Pass climb from KwaZulu-Natal, is run with specialist operators only.
Seasons at altitude
Altitude sets the calendar. Summer (November to March) brings afternoon thunderstorms that drivers time around; winter (June to August) brings snow to the passes, occasional closures, and Africa's improbable ski season at Afriski in the Maluti mountains, about four and a half hours from Maseru via the Moteng pass. Highland itineraries in winter carry flexible days as standard. Distances look short on the map and are not; the vehicle plan is built from real drive times, not straight lines.
