Queen Alia and the first night
Queen Alia International (AMM) lies about 35 km south of Amman, half an hour to the city on the airport highway, and usefully already on the way south toward Petra. Groups landing in the evening often overnight in Amman and roll south at dawn; the arrival meet is a name-board pickup at the group kerb. Amman's own half-day, the Citadel, the Roman theatre and downtown, fits either end of the circuit.
Petra, Wadi Rum and the loop
Petra is about three hours from Amman on the Desert Highway, and the coach's day is defined by the site's shape: set-down at the visitor centre, then the Siq and the Treasury on foot, with the vehicle repositioned for the evening pickup. Wadi Rum is another hour south, where groups switch to the Bedouin camps' 4x4s for the desert itself, the coach waiting at the village. The classic loop returns north along the Dead Sea Highway, closing the triangle at the lowest point on earth; Jerash's colonnaded Roman streets, an hour north of Amman, make the best add-on day.
Season and practical notes
Spring and autumn are peak: Petra's trails and the desert camps fill, and coaches book out around Easter and October, so the vehicle is reserved with the hotels rather than after them. Summer moves the schedule to early starts and Dead Sea afternoons; winter brings occasional snow to Amman's hills while Aqaba on the Red Sea, four hours south, stays warm and closes the circuit for dive-and-beach extensions. The FCDO's Jordan advice concentrates on the Syrian border area, far off the touring map, and the standard circuit runs without restriction; a coach with driver on the loop is the settled formula.
