Bus Hire in Cashel

Cashel is a heritage market town in County Tipperary, 40 kilometres south-east of Limerick via the N24 and N8. The town is dominated by the Rock of Cashel, a limestone outcrop rising 90 metres above the surrounding plain, crowned by one of the finest groups of medieval ecclesiastical buildings in Ireland: Cormac's Chapel (1127-1134), the Gothic cathedral (13th century), the round tower (12th century), and the Hall of Vicars Choral (15th century). The Rock is visible from the N8 motorway (Dublin to Cork) throughout the Tipperary plain and is Ireland's single most distinctive skyline.

Cork Airport (ORK) is 65 kilometres south via the N8 (approximately 1 hour by coach). Dublin Airport (DUB) is 165 kilometres north-east via the N8 (approximately 2 hours). Limerick (40 kilometres west) and Clonmel (25 kilometres south-east via the N74) are the nearest larger cities. Cashel is a natural day-trip destination from both Limerick and Kilkenny.

Rock of Cashel: The Medieval Complex

The Rock of Cashel (the OPW site is open year-round, on the north side of the town, with the main car park off the N8 approach road) is the premier heritage site in Munster. The complex is tightly grouped on the limestone summit and is best understood in the following order: the Round Tower (28 metres, 12th century, the oldest structure and the first visible feature); Cormac's Chapel (1127-1134, the most architecturally significant Romanesque building in Ireland, with a carved tympanum over each doorway showing a centaur and a lion scene derived from Continental manuscripts, and Bavarian Romanesque influence on the decoration brought by Cormac MacCarthy after his pilgrimage through Germany); the Cathedral (13th century, Gothic, with a substantial north transept and crossing tower); the Hall of Vicars Choral (15th century, housing the original St Patrick's Cross -- a plain sandstone cross with a figure of Christ cut in low relief, formerly in the cathedral). Guided OPW tours depart from the hall; self-guided is also available. The site is wheelchair-accessible to the hall and most of the cathedral floor; the upper sections are on steep uneven ground. The coach car park is at the bottom of the rock on the town side.

Hore Abbey and the Town

Hore Abbey (at the foot of the Rock, 5 minutes walk from the coach car park) is a 13th-century Cistercian monastery, the most intact medieval monastic ruin at the base of the Rock. It was founded in 1272 by Archbishop David MacCarville for the Cistercian order and stands in open farmland with the Rock of Cashel forming the backdrop -- one of the most photographed compositions in Irish heritage photography. The abbey is freely accessible. Cashel town has the Bru Boru Heritage Centre (adjacent to the car park, run by Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann), which stages traditional music and dance performances in summer evenings; advance group booking is recommended.

Athassel Priory and the Golden Vale

Athassel Priory (10 kilometres south-west of Cashel via the N74 to Golden and a minor road, approximately 15 minutes) is the largest medieval priory in Ireland by ground area: an early 13th-century Augustinian foundation that grew to cover over 2 hectares, with walls enclosing a gatehouse, bridge over the River Suir, church, claustral buildings, and extensive outbuildings. The site is unmanaged and freely accessible via a footbridge and a short walk across a field. The setting in the Golden Vale (Ireland's most productive agricultural land, running from Tipperary to Limerick) is atmospheric; the scale of the ruins is surprising given how little it is known outside Tipperary. Full-size coaches can park on the approach road at the bridge.
