The Gambia is West Africa's easiest group destination: one airport, a compact Atlantic resort strip, and a river that organises every excursion. British winter-sun charters built the market, so transfer and tour logistics are practised and prices are settled. Send flight numbers and the hotel; the quote comes back fixed.
Banjul airport and the resort strip
Banjul International (BJL) at Yundum sits about half an hour from the Senegambia strip, where the Kololi, Kotu and Bakau hotels line the beach. Charter flights land in banks through the November-to-April season and transfer blocks meet them with hotel rotations, luggage trucks on the big days, and a welcome that has been polished over decades of package tourism. Out of season the same runs quote cheaply and quietly.
The river organises everything
Excursions here follow the River Gambia. The standard group days: Kunta Kinteh Island and the Albreda-Juffureh villages, the roots-heritage journey done by boat with coach connections at the wharf; the Makasutu forest and Lamin Lodge's creeks; Tendaba camp further upriver for birdlife, one of West Africa's richest birding regions. Boats do the water legs, minibuses the road ends, and the relay is timed as one itinerary. Serrekunda's market and Bakau's crocodile pool fill the half days.
Season and practical notes
The dry season, November to April, is the market: warm, rainless and matched to the charter schedules. The rains from roughly June to October soften the upriver roads, so wet-season programmes stick closer to the coast or carry 4x4 support. Distances are small, a minibus is the standard vehicle, and the FCDO's advice for The Gambia carries no travel restrictions, which keeps planning refreshingly simple.
