Bordeaux-Merignac (BOD) is about 12 km west of the centre, normally 20 to 30 minutes, which makes group arrivals straightforward compared with most French regional cities. Paris is a little over two hours by TGV for groups arriving through Charles de Gaulle, with coach set-down at Bordeaux Saint-Jean station. The driver tracks the flight for a pre-booked group transfer.

The wine tours that define the market

Wine touring is the reason most groups come. Saint-Emilion, a UNESCO World Heritage village, is about 45 minutes east and its steep cobbled lanes are closed to coaches, so vehicles park below and groups walk up. The Medoc chateaux run north along the D2 route des chateaux, roughly 45 minutes to an hour to Margaux and Pauillac, and Graves and Sauternes lie south.

Chateau visits are by appointment, usually two per day with lunch between, and most estates ask for group bookings well ahead. Some of the smaller properties have gravel courtyards and tight gates that suit a minibus with driver better than a full-size coach, which is worth settling before the itinerary is fixed.

The city centre and the fair calendar

Bordeaux's eighteenth-century centre, the Port of the Moon, is UNESCO-listed and largely restricted to trams and pedestrians, so coaches set down at the Quinconces or along the quays and the Place de la Bourse, the water mirror and the Grand Theatre are walked. The Cite du Vin north of the centre has its own coach parking.

Vinexpo and the congress calendar at the Parc des Expositions north of the city fill hotels across the region and tighten vehicle availability for those weeks, so trade-fair transport is booked well in advance.
