Bole and the continental hub
Addis Ababa Bole International (ADD) is one of Africa's busiest hubs and the base of a carrier connecting much of the continent, so many groups arrive here on multi-country itineraries. The airport is close to the city and the transfer is short, though Addis traffic is heavy and drivers pad timings accordingly. A pre-booked group meet with a name board is standard, and drivers work in English alongside Amharic.
The African Union and the conference market
Addis hosts the African Union headquarters and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, which gives the city a conference and delegation calendar unlike anywhere else in the region: summit weeks fill hotels, tighten vehicle availability and bring road closures around the institutional quarter. Delegation transport is quoted as timed rotations with drivers used to accreditation checkpoints. Outside summits, the city's own sights, the National Museum with the Lucy fossil, Holy Trinity Cathedral and the Merkato, fill visitor programmes.
The historic route, and where we do not go
The northern historic route, Lalibela's rock-hewn churches, Gondar's castles, Axum and Bahir Dar on Lake Tana, is traditionally flown between rather than driven, given the distances and road conditions, with vehicles handling the local legs at each stop. Coverage there depends entirely on current conditions: the FCDO advises against travel to a number of Ethiopian regions, with the advisory map changing as the security situation does. We confirm every leg against current advice at the time of booking and decline the legs that fall inside advisory areas rather than quote work our operators cannot safely run. A minibus with driver is the standard vehicle for city and local work.
