Benin's group travel concentrates along its short coast, and that suits honest planning: Cotonou, the Ouidah heritage route, the Ganvie stilt village and Porto-Novo all sit within ninety minutes of each other. Southern circuits run well with local minibus operators; the far north is under FCDO advisories and outside our coverage.
Cotonou: the working gateway
Cadjehoun airport (COO) sits inside Cotonou itself, minutes from the main hotels, which makes arrivals refreshingly simple; the meet is a name-board pickup with the city's moto-taxi swarm best admired from inside the vehicle. Cotonou is the commercial capital and the base for every southern circuit, with the Dantokpa market, one of West Africa's largest, as its own sensory excursion.
Ouidah, Ganvie and Porto-Novo
Ouidah, forty minutes west, carries the country's deepest history: the Route des Esclaves runs from the old slave market to the Door of No Return memorial on the beach, and the town is also the spiritual home of vodun, with the January festival drawing visitors worldwide. Ganvie, reached by boat across Lake Nokoue, is Africa's largest stilt village, a coach-to-pirogue relay we time as one journey. Porto-Novo, the official capital, adds Afro-Brazilian architecture and the Honme palace museum an hour east. Abomey's UNESCO-listed royal palaces, three hours northwest, make the long heritage day.
Coverage, stated plainly
The FCDO advises against all travel to Benin's far northern border areas, including the national parks adjoining Burkina Faso and Niger, and against all but essential travel to zones beyond them. We do not arrange transport there, including to Pendjari and W parks while the advisories stand. The southern circuits above run without restriction; itineraries are confirmed leg by leg at booking, and a minibus with driver is the standard southern vehicle.
