Coach Hire Guide: Standard, Executive, and Double-Decker Options

Coach is the catch-all term for any large passenger vehicle hired with a driver. In practice, it covers four meaningfully different vehicle types, each suited to a different group size, journey type, and budget. This guide works through the distinctions so you can specify what you need rather than accepting whatever the operator offers first.

The Four Coach Types

Midi-coach (25 to 36 seats)

Positioned between a large minibus and a full-size coach. The midi-coach is more manoeuvrable than a 12.5-metre full-size coach, fits into more venues and car parks, and is right-sized for groups of 25 to 35 where a full coach would leave a third of the seats empty. Key features: underfloor luggage hold, air conditioning, onboard toilet (usually), overhead storage. Not available in all markets — strongest availability in the UK and Germany.

Standard coach (37 to 57 seats)

The workhorse of group transport. Available in 49-seat and 57-seat configurations. Standard equipment: underfloor luggage hold of 8 to 12 cubic metres, air conditioning, onboard toilet, overhead storage, reclining seats. The 49-seat layout gives more hold space and seat pitch; the 57-seat layout maximises passenger capacity. Right for groups of 37 or more, day trips, multi-day tours, conference shuttles, sporting events, and school trips.

Executive coach (24 to 36 seats)

A premium product. Executive coaches carry fewer passengers than a standard coach but in significantly more comfort: wider leather or high-back seats, tables between pairs, additional legroom, sometimes individual reading lights, USB charging, onboard catering facilities, and occasionally a small lounge area at the rear. Used primarily for corporate travel, VIP transfers, incentive trips, and long-distance journeys where passenger comfort is a commercial requirement. Costs 30 to 60 percent more per journey than a standard coach of comparable size, but the per-person premium is usually smaller than the headline difference.

Double-decker coach (54 to 72 or more seats)

High-capacity vehicles suited to specific situations: major event shuttles, stadium transfers, open-top sightseeing tours. The UK has the strongest availability of hire double-deckers in Europe. Height restrictions (typically 4.2 to 4.4 metres) limit access at some venues. Not suitable for routes with low bridges or underground car parks. For standard group travel, the single-deck full-size coach is usually the better operational choice.

What to Specify When Booking

Do not leave vehicle type ambiguous in your enquiry. Specify: the number of passengers, whether a toilet is required, whether luggage hold space is needed and approximately how much, any access restrictions at the destination, and whether the journey is a day trip or multi-day. This removes operator discretion and produces a quote for what you actually need.

Frequently Asked Questions

A standard coach prioritises passenger capacity — typically 49 to 57 seats — with functional seating, air conditioning, and a toilet. An executive coach prioritises comfort over capacity, usually carrying 24 to 36 passengers in wider seats with more legroom, tables, and sometimes onboard catering.

Standard full-size coaches are available in 49-seat and 57-seat configurations. The 49-seat layout provides more luggage space per passenger. The 57-seat layout maximises capacity but with less seat pitch.

Yes, in certain markets. The UK has the strongest availability of double-decker hire coaches, with capacities from 54 to 72 or more passengers. Commonly used for high-volume event shuttles and large stadium transfers.

A midi-coach carries 25 to 36 passengers and sits between a large minibus and a full-size coach. It has an underfloor luggage hold and usually an onboard toilet. Right for groups where a full-size coach is oversized and a minibus lacks the facilities you need.

Yes, typically 30 to 60 percent more per journey. However, because executive coaches carry fewer passengers, the per-person premium is often smaller than the headline price difference. For corporate groups where comfort matters, the upgrade is frequently worth it.
